Rudyard Kipling
Who hath smelt woodsmoke at twilight?
Who hath heard the birch log burning?
Who is quick to read the noises of the night?
Let him follow with the others
For the young men's feet are turning
To the camps of proved desire and known delight.

1985
John,
Yes, I was in the Bishopric with Ralph Poulsen.
I would like to quote from my red journal:
13 Jan 1985
In this journal there are some large empty gaps. Just two pages before there is a 6 month gap followed by a 9 month gap. This has been a dark time for me. I have been worried about school, work, family, apartment. Not many things seemed to work correctly. At this present time I still don't know if I have finished collage. I feel I have been subject to a BYU Policy which I had no control over. I keep tell everyone I'm done with my schooling.
In the past 6 months I have tried to work harder at my calling as Ward Clerk. I've tried to move membership records out of people who don't live in our ward. In this I hve been sucessful in reducing total member records held.
Now that Larry Blake is moving to Las Vegas for a new job, we need a new 2nd Councelor inthe bishopric. I have an appointment with the Stake presidency this wednesday. I think I know what they are going to say.
Also this next week we may find out about a new job at AMFAC. This oportunity is exciting to think about. I'm looknig forward to work there.
16 Jan 1985
Today, Raquel & I went to the funeral services of Leland Sttanford Briggs. We are proud to have been a part of his life in the 85th ward.
We also went by BYU to get my report card. B in BM 463, C+ in BM 499. This means I have not fulfilled the requirments to graduate from BYU.
Later on in the evening we had an appointment with President Clyde. The Lord has called me to be the 2nd Counselor in the Bishopric to Bishop Poulsen.
Also we haven't heard about any new jobs. Also we have two vacant appartments since the 1st of January.
20 Jan 1985
Today Bishop Ralph J. Poulsen ordained me a High Priest. Then President Norman Clyde set me apart as a counselor to Bishop Poulsen.
Those that stood in on the first one was Neil Christensen, Wayne Christensen, Glen Fullmer, Bert Miner, Larry Blake, Bishop Poulsen, Bernell Hutchings, & Norman Clyde. Those that stood in for the Second was Pres Clyde, Bishop Poulsen, & Bernell Hutchings. We then set apart Gary Olsen as Wark Clerk.
Some of the counsel from President Clyde was to be open with my feelings as I counsel with the Bishop, but to make sure I sustain the decision once it has been made. Also I should teach the youth.

Cinderella
Can you tell which one is the character?
Such a good picture of my family.
Thanks Duane!
Such a good picture of my family.
Thanks Duane!

Aimee and Trevor just finished two weekends of "Cinderella" at Downey High School. Aimee was "Joy", the ill-tempered step-sister; and Trevor was the concertmaster, playing in the orchestra pit. Deanna made four costumes (two for Aimee and two for the step-mother), which was a long labor of love. The audiences loved Aimee's humorous portrayal. Spencer came opening weekend. Mom came for the final Sunday matinee.

Ok, I found another one. This is a real classic. I always want to remember Becca, so full of life and just dancing.

MY DAD - ALBERT EDWARD HANSON
(by Roger Worthington Thorpe Hanson)(Uncle Roger)
Time moves on swiftly whether we want it to or not! Just recently I realized that my Dad had passed away 40 years ago. I vividly remember that last night (November 29, 1968) going to the N.E. Deaconess Hospital in Boston with my mother and sisters apprehensive about what the future might be for the "Hanson Clan".
Just a few days previous, he had kidney stones removed - apparently he had been in great pain. Afterwards, I met his surgeon in the hospital lobby who explained exactly what he had done. He even drew me a diagram (which I kept for many years) .
He made it sound so simple. Dad seemed to be doing all right so I returned to my new job in Washington, D.C. Then, a few days later Polly called and suggested that I should return to Boston. Dad was not doing well.
Dad was always there for me when I needed him - so I should be there for him. He always seemed to be in good spirits and enjoyed being with other people. Singing in glee clubs was a great joy to him and an opportunity to meet other people. Unbeknown to me at the time, Miss Nichols, my third grade teacher, was in the church choir that my Dad had formed. One day she went around her classroom listening to individual voices. Apparently, she was not impressed with mine since I never received any offers to sing in a choir. Fortunately, my sisters are much more gifted in this area. - My Dad never said a word to me about this.
Late in his career, he became a salesman and sold business engineering to small and medium sized firms in New England. With his way-with-peopler he was quite successful at it. He often had an interesting tale to tell about his clients.
Although I was familiar with the "SalesmanDad," I never knew much about his youth - it seemed as if he didn't want to talk about it. Oh, we all knew he was born in London, England, and came to Canada as a boy to be on a farm outside Toronto. But that was about it.
Recently, I came across some draft employee records for R.G. Dunn in his handwriting that I want to share with you. Based mainly on these, I have developed a "time-line" of some of his activities which are new to me and may be of interest to you. Unfortunately, there are a few inconsistencies - I don't know why. I have used an "educated-guess" in some cases. In addition, some English friends, Alan and Pat Hunt, were kind enough to get Dad's official birth certificate and a picture of where he was born, a rather nicelooking row house in Upper Tooting. Coincidentally, Pat grew up in this area and they lived nearby for a while.
I don't have any evidence as to where Dad actually landed in North America, but it is felt that Canada would be most likely.
Your thoughts, questions and remarks are welcome.

A Trip to the Provo Temple
To celebrate Pauls birthday, we planned a trip to the Provo Temple to participate in sealings. Not all of use could enter the temple that day. We all felt sad. I tried to bright everyone by telling them a story of another Temple session not attended, that was a blessing.
So as not to embellish I found the story and copied it here.
"... With the knowledge that our great-grandmother, Ellen Christen, had done temple work for some of ther people in June 1893, I had new hope that we might learn more. ... Relia and I hurried off to Salt Lake that morning intent on participating in a session at the temple. A lot of other people had the same plan and the first and second sessions were over crowded. We were told to come back in the afternoon. We could not because we had young children and our livestock to care for.
"Our disappointment must have been very evident, because as we sat there in the Annex waiting for the return train, one of the ordinance workders ased if there was something they could do to compensate. I told him that my people had done work at the temple in June 1893 for their kindred of which we had no record. ... He escorted us to a basement room where large filing cabnets covered the walls. ... He opened the book and asked for the names of the proxies. In seconds he had found them. Grandfather, grandmother and great-groudmother had done ordinances on hehalf of fourteen of her kindred. The relationships to the proxies, dates and places of birth, etc, were all there. Our dissappointment had proven a bessing in disguise.
"With the data which Brother Card copied from the temple archive, we soon went to the library and made a deposit on research to be done, in Demark. ... So it was that in a few weeks time we received 145 names."
There is more to this story:
"It is said that grandma Ellen Christensen had been very sick the year before and said she could die happy if she had only done the temple work for her people. Phoebe said, "Why don't you pray to the Lord and ask Him to help you get better so you can go and do some?" Phoebe said, "She did pray to the Lord and she did get better so last June (June 1893) we went and did some." ... Aunt Mable told that her sweet old grandmother had to be carried to the train when they left for Salt Lake, but when they returned she could walk.

At Ward Camp out

Here is the day we went to MIA Shalom for a Fathers and Sons Camp. It was great fun to be with John and Cameron. For the activities we were invited to use the facilities there for the COPES course. Cameron got shoved through a spider web. He walked across a big pipe. Here is is walking across a row of logs. These are way off the ground.
This is the day that Cameron went to his first girls camp (minus all the girls).

Pictures from 1961
Here we are making Ice Cream. This bring back wonderful memories. I can still remember the Oleander Bush on the side of the house. And in the background is the home where Keith Lyons lived. I thought those days would never end. I did not know that my life would change so much.
We were lucky enough to be on the same team for a few years. Can you tell what it says on Duanes Baseball? He loved to pitch. He wanted to pitch. He was always hauling me out to catch for him. He did have a complete collection of the 1962 Giants baseball cards.
See the first time I went to Vernal Falls was in 1961. I was 9 that year. I still remember the night mare of falling over the falls. Also did I ever tell you how fascinated I was with rope. You should see my collection now. Plus I made a book of knots. I hope you all get to see these falls from this bridge.

Now here is our fort that we had in our back yard. Our dog Dash is holding still for the picture. Duane made some brands for us. a DH and GH, plus the horse shoes. This fort had a door, a window, a hatch with ladder and a secret compartment.
Later Dad went back and asked them for the door. He saved it for quite some time, but when we went back to find it it was gone.

Morning Glory Arch
Well
I finally got it figured out how to upload movies.
We hiked up a place called Negro Bill Canyon. I suppose this was great because we did not have to pay go hike this place. We showed up early enough that we only saw one couple in front of us. The hike was easy. Raquel and Becca did pretty well. Actually Becca was trying to let us go in front, but after awhile she was in the lead. (And I was bringing up the rear). But it was a great hike. Since we really did not know where we were going or what was at the end, we did not know what to expect.
Then, we could tell we were at the end of the canyon. But then we heard a bunch of yelling. Oh, great I thought to myself, there are a bunch of people (hippies) up here.
But to our surprise, there were only two couples in front of us and four people that were repelling down into the canyon. We got to see first hand how they rappel.
I always wondered how they all get to the bottom then get the rope back. They explained that the rope is looped over a ring. When they go down they are using both ends of the rope. Then when they are finished they just pull one end of the rope and it slips out of the ring still at the top. [Can anyone explain this better than me?]
Just to hear the stream as it trickled in to the box canyon. And can you see the Poison Ivy?
